Aftermath of War

I have named my art The Aftermath of War.  I chose this title because it shows the true colors of war. It also shows what war does to people and the outcome of war.
I researched my topic and got the official casualties count for numerous wars. The results were so astounding that I knew that I would do this subject.
The significance of this topic is that it ruins lives. There have been millions of lives lost to war in the twentieth century alone. For every one of those lives, families are ruined. This topic is important to me because I don’t like it when families are torn apart and when people are scared for life.
I used black and red colors because they are dark and the color of blood. I chose the pictures because they all showed the aftermath of war. I used Google Images to get the pictures I needed. The quote I chose was a very good one at representing my topic. “There was never a good war or a bad peace” This shows that wars are not good, but a time of peace is good. I very much agree with that quote.

Child soldiers is a world-wide issue. Child soldiers are just not in Africa. They are in South America and Asia. Children everywhere are being pulled out of a normal life and into a traumatizing one. Some charities are providing psychological help for the kids, but once a child gets chosen to be a soldier there is not much they can do. This is important to me because I am also a kid and I know that if I was thrown into the battlefield, I wouldn’t like it and I would be traumatized for life.

The things that I used to create my hexagon are: red construction paper, pictures of child soldiers and toys for children . I used the red construction paper to represent the blood shed during the wars that involved child soldiers.  I used pictures to show how horrible it is to be a child soldier and what you are exposed to at a very young age. Lastly, I put children toys on my hexagon to show what the child soldiers are missing since they got their childhood robbed from them.

The media that I used for this project is color pencils. I chose this media because of the word “color” in the word “color pencils”. I truly hope that our earth would be always colorful like the word “color pencils”. So I used the color pencils and drew a picture of our Earth coughing through the unclean air. Then I drew another picture of a garbage container filled with all sorts of garbage that humans made.  Also I drew a picture of a lake, with died fish bodies.  And then, I drew another picture of different pipes with polluted air rising up. The air around there is unclean that made the environment even harsher. I drew all that because I think pollution is a serious problem in our society. As a result, around 56,000,000 people died every year because of pollution. Remember, we have only ONE earth to protect! Earth is our home place, it is where we live for thousands and thousands and thousands of years! We should be taking care of it. Not destroy!

ANIMAL ABUSE
For my project, I used colored pencils and markers. I picked this world issue because the animals are being abused in many ways. This problem isn’t solving quickly. People are trying to help by making an animal welfare and they are giving their own money to a foundation but that’s not enough for now. Many people from all over the world are helping and adopting animals. But other people are abusing animals and don’t care about what they feel.
I draw a puppy with a broken paw and I put letters behind saying ‘STOP ANIMAL ABUSE’. I used dark colors for the dog, same as with the letters. For the background I used light color, like yellow to make the letters behind the puppy be seen. I made the puppy look poor and sad so he looks neglected. By adopting a dog or any animal, you won’t change the whole world but the whole world will change for that one animal. Your help means a lot!

My hexagon is of an American soldier who was killed in the war in Afghanistan. I chose this media to illustrate the idea because there is a lot of soldiers and other people dying in Afghanistan. The war on Afghanistan has impacted a lot of people; For example, since 2001 1,496 soldiers have been killed in action, and 15,415 have been wounded in action. This shows how the war has impacted families and friends of fallen soldiers, and not just the soldiers alone. This also has had a impact on the US financially; $3.2-4trillion has been spent on the war on Afghanistan. Also thousands of innocent people have been killed because of the terrorism in Afghanistan. About 3,000 people were killed by terrorists on September 11, 2001.

Things are being done to try to end the war. For example, on January 26, 2010, at the International conference on Afghanistan in London, which brought together some 70 countries and organizations, Afghan president Hamid Karzai told world leaders that he intended to reach out to the top echelons of the Taliban with a peace initiative. Another thing being done to end the war is by Obama, he said 23,000 troops will leave the country by the summer of 2012. A big turn in the war was on May 1, 2011 when al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden was killed by Seal Team 6.

What I did in my hexagon to symbolize the issue was a soldiers helmet on top of his gun and also his boots aside. It symbolizes that a soldier was killed in action which represents the big issue of soldiers dying on Afghanistan. I used color pencils to illustrate my hexagon because I think they are easier to use and i had some detail that i wouldn’t have been able to draw with markers.

My hexagon is about education. It shows what Americans are getting in school versus what poor countries are getting for their education. Education’s world concern is how many poor countries are not getting the education they need. This issue is occurring mainly in Africa and middle eastern countries. This issue is important to me because education essential for people to succeed. It helps us function in the real world. Without education many people will not have a job, and therefore, will not be able to support their families.

What I used to create my hexagon was colored pencils. I chose colored pencils because they do not bleed through or smudge. The colors would also allow me to make intricate drawings. I drew text books, math symbols, and a school to symbolize that we need to send school supplies and teachers to Africa and other poor countries so that the children can get the education that the need.

Tripp T.Hunger kills and harms many people throughout the world. In Asia and the Pacific 578 million are without food, and 925 million are hungry. In Sub-Saharan Africa 239 million are living without energy from food. What is being done? Companies and organizations are raising money to fight hunger. Food banks have volunteers to help pack, and distribute food to those in hunger. Schools around the country have food drives and walks against hunger. Helping fight against hunger is very important to me. To think of people that can’t have food and be without it for days is very meaningful. Some die from starvation, this can’t be happening. We need to do something about it. To make this work of art I used colored pencil. I used this because I used detail, and colored pencil allowed me to bring these details out. In my hexagon I symbolized hunger by drawing two hungry looking children. These children both are thinking of food to eat. I also drew people walking, which symbolized what our school does to help against hunger. I also wrote a meaningful quote, to motivate people to help. I said “ For those living in hunger is a daily battle. But they don’t have to fight alone”

Over millions of gallons of oil have spilled into the oceans.
Innocent animals get covered from head to toe.
Lots of humans’ homes get damaged as well.

Several global initiatives are taking place.
People are cleaning up the spills.
Institutes, such as the Audubon Nature Institute,
Lend a hand and treat affected animals.
Let’s all offer help, and lend a helping hand,
So take a stand and help prevent oil spills.

Oil spills are important to me because I love animals and seeing something that is this big of an issue in the world makes me want to make a difference and address it to the world. Also, I want to find out ways that other people are making a difference. I chose to use oil pastels to make my artwork because the colors were bold and blended together very well which made a bigger affect and represented the oil spills better. In my art I made a picture of a sea otter in an oil spill to represent how innocent animals are getting harmed and covered in the oil, and how people should do something to help.

The world wide impact of lack of education is that kids may be not be educated, and if they live in poverty they may never get out of it. They will end up living the same life their parents did. To improve this issue teachers are improving, schools are being built, and schools around the world are donating school supplies to the kids that don’t have any. This is important to me because I feel that if you want to succeed in life you need to have an education in order to do so.  Without an education I don’t think you can succeed in life, or at least, not go as far.

In my work of art I symbolized my issue by interpreting a portion of education by writing what the picture symbolizes. I also used color to make it seem like the kids in Africa will have a good life if they get the education they need.

The I chose to use was construction paper, paint and a little bit of pastel for touchups. My world issue was child hunger and the effects of malnutrition for kids around the world. The project displayed the hardships that children faces by the single one image of an African child who is clearly suffering from malnutriton. The hands reaching toward the represents the desperate help children need around the world. It conveys the powerful message that on alone can’t make a difference but when a group of many are interdependent toward one another, big impacts can happen. The media I used of bright hands showed the quality of iridescence and power a group of people could have on an issue. The paint was plain but bold in order to not conflict with the main focal point of the the hexagon, the helping hands.Furthermore, the black background brushed with chalk brought the attention back to the hands and tied back to giving hope to the hungry.

I teach with Emily Cook in a Chicago suburban school. While my students have learned about global issues in the past, this project allowed them to see that these are not problems that people in other places in the world have to deal with, but rather, that these are world problems, and since we all have a civic responsibility to the world, these are our problems too.
