“Pollution”

I used colored pencils and pastel chalk to make this piece of artwork.

Pollution does some real damage,
In such a short time we can’t even manage.
There are two ways our Earth can appear,
So lets keep it pretty, and have no fear!
Pollution, to me, is a worldwide issue,
  Just waiting to be fixed,
Believe me, pollution. We won’t miss you!

Hunger
I used google images to find pictures of children without enough food. I used this to put the pictures of them on top of the garbage to show that there are people who have to struggle a lot for food.
There are many of people in this world that need to dig through garbage to find something to eat so they don’t starve to death. Specifically in America, there are 13 million children are hungry. There are also people that have so much food that they can’t eat it so it ends up being thrown away. I believe that the people who are more fortunate than others should share the food that is left over with the other people who aren't as privileged. This hexagon is important to me because, it shows people how hard getting food is for some people, that they would even eat food from the garbage.
My hexagon is a painting of hungry children going through the garbage dump in order to search for something to eat. I used different dark water paint colors and covered the ground of the painting to make it look like garbage. I also cut out pictures of starving children to put them there to show that there are people that have search through garbage to find food.

Media used: Paint and colored pencils
I used this media because everything looks clean and put together.

My issue is bullying because everyone goes through being bullied one time or another. It can vary from mean nicknames and comments to months of pain and sadness. But because of it, people are making a difference and trying to end it.  Molly and Lauren, the founders of a movement called Kind Campaign - a girl’s anti-bullying program, are trying to do just that.   Because of the bullying I went through, Kind Campaign has made a huge impact in my life and that is why the issue of bullying is so important to me!

I created the art of my hexagon because the girl resembles how so many girls feel today and everyday. The girl is in the middle and surrounded by all of the mean and nasty words that impact her life everyday. The statistic is placed in the middle of the hexagon to state what an impact bullying can make on peoples lives. Finally, everything is then tied together with the meaningful words at the bottom.

Peace on Earth

By Veronica Boratyn

I created my project about the idea of world peace. I used paint, colored pencils, and permanent markers in my work. I also included some quotes by Bertrand Russell, Mahatma Gandhi, and John Lennon. I think they add more meaning and impact to the work. War has reached and affected almost every corner of the world, and it doesn’t have to be that way. War is preventable, and all greed, suffering, and fighting really can be stopped.

Organizations like Amnesty International and the Nonviolent Peace Force are working to prevent wars and help victims of war when their own governments abandon them by providing them with temporary housing and other necessities. In my artwork I showed what could happen if we don’t learn to get along (the nuclear explosion) and how together we can create something greater than any one of us can individually- and that is Peace on Earth.

Pollution Before It Stops Us
By: Heather P.
Air Pollution is a big problem all over the world, from China’s big factories to the United States cutting down trees, and every country contributes in making the
ozone layer smaller and smaller. “Stop Pollution Before It Stops Us,” means stop
pollution before it kills all of us. This issue is very important to me because,
in 2004 I went to China with my parents to adopt my little sister, and when I
was there I experienced how bad the pollution was. The air was so muggy in some places that I could hardly breathe. So I want to try and make a difference to
help the people in China that have to live with that gruesome air everyday.

In my artwork, I am showing that there is a huge factory right next to a school. In one of the school’s windows there is a very small flower. The size of the flower shows that there is so much pollution, flowers can’t grow any larger, and there isn’t any other greenery in sight. Also, I drew two girls trying to play soccer, but with the pollution so thick, the two girls can barely see each other. And the pollution is making them cough consistently. If there was not a factory there, the girls would be healthy and happily playing soccer. And with no factory there, trees and plants would grow which would help eliminate carbon dioxide and pollution, and not contribute to the problem like the factory.

My name is Michael Olson and the name of my art work is Death of the Innocent. The media I used in my piece were colored pencils, cardboard,  and printed sayings from the Internet. The world wide significance is that war will always kill those who are innocent.  I care because many people who are killed in war do not deserve to die.  The red river on the mask symbolizes all the innocent blood spilt. The tears symbolize the grief of the lost loved ones families. The broken heart symbolizes the hearts broken by war and the families killed or wiped off the face of the Earth. The orange symbolizes the destruction caused by war.

  Help the starving children

The issue I looked into  is starving people. They don’t have enough food to live or a great enough supply of water. People around the world are trying to get those who are starving food and water so they can have a healthy and better life style. This is important to me because I really wonder what the people feel in Zimbabwe, Malawi, Ethiopia, Angola, and Sudan who do not have enough food to live. I wanna help these people out.

In my work of art I used pictures from the Internet.  I chose to use this media to illustrate my idea because I found good pictures to use that would relate to my topic.  The picture I used to symbolize my issue is starving children. A picture of starving children is reaching for a peace of bread to symbolize that they want food really bad.

No food for those in need

My hexagon shows pictures of starving African children and what they need. The reason why I chose these images was because they display the kids in need and their appearance. It also shows what they need and those are the things that they do not have.

My issue is child starvation and this impacts the whole world for the most part. The children in Asia and Africa are starving the most. Organizations like the Feed the Children. They are trying to help the starving children in places where they do not really have that much. This is important to me because they make a difference in those children’s lives.

My work of art symbolizes this issue because my hexagon displays the things that these starving children need along with the appearance of these children who need help. This might trigger in ones mind to help out.

In 2010, nine hundred twenty-five million people were starving around the world.  Every day children and adults are under fed and starving to death.  This is happening in developed countries, near east and north Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, and the Pacific.
As you can see, starvation is in many places of the world.  The problem of starvation has been opened to the public eye and many groups are doing projects to solve the problem of starvation.  For example, Tackle Hunger is collecting one million pounds of food for starving people around the world.  Also, Action Against Hunger has teamed up with schools to have students walk one mile and donate food to stop starvation around the world.  As more people learn about starvation and how bad it is, more people are helping out to stop starvation.

People need to see that we are all similar and share common experiences.  We need to be able to link issues that are personal and local with issues that are global.  That shows that we all need to be looking out for one another.  There are kitchens at churches for starving and homeless people.  People need to take that and transfer it it to all the starving people around the world.

To create my project, I used google images.  I searched google images for starving people.  I did this to show how sad it is to see all the starving people around the world.  I took a bunch of the pictures I found and glued them on my hexagon to make a collage.  It finish my hexagon off, I glued a stop sign in the middle of my pictures because we need to stop starvation.

The media I used for my Hexagon is paper. Child abuse is an important issue, because it is happening all over the world. Children are dying everyday. They are our future so they need to be kept safe. This problem is important to me because no one should have to go through that much pain as a child. In my art I used two pictures of abuse victims to show all the mental and physical abuse they go through. Then I added four words that represent how they are feeling. Lastly I added the child abuse awareness ribbon to show that we need to spread awareness.

I teach with Emily Cook in a Chicago suburban school. While my students have learned about global issues in the past, this project allowed them to see that these are not problems that people in other places in the world have to deal with, but rather, that these are world problems, and since we all have a civic responsibility to the world, these are our problems too.
