The Rainbow After the Storm

Emily K.

I think that Child abuse is very sad that is why I created this piece. This shows the stages a child could go through when they are abused. It goes from happy to sad. In the middle I painted a tear to represent the sadness. The Tear also represents a raindrop because after a storm there is a rainbow. One day these children will be happy again. Child abuse should never happen. It has got to be stopped.

War

The world-wide impact of war is that when war happens only destruction and sadness is left in its wake. There are many charities and government programs that help people who live in war-torn cities. This is important to me because my grandparents came to America from Germany in the late 40’s because they were trying to get away from a destroyed Germany.

In my hexagon I wanted to show that war only hurts the people where the fighting is taking place, and that war never solves the problem. War only makes the problem worse. I used the Internet to get the pictures and type the words. I also used red and blue markers to color the hexagon. In my pictures I wanted to show that after a war nothing is the same for the people that live there. For the colors I wanted to show that many people don’t realize that war leaves millions homeless, but also that more people are actually finding out that war is bad and they are doing something about it. That’s why there is more red on the hexagon then the blue.

There are many ways to create a solution to endangered species, but they can be hard to start if you don’t have a lot of motivation.  To express my solutions to the problem, I used colored pencils to draw out objects and things that represent ways to help the poor animals.  Some of my solutions are to create and/or join a organization, create laws against poaching endangered species, protecting land, no air and water pollution, and recycling.  I believe that there is always a way to save something before it is completely gone.

My hexagon is raising awareness about endangered animal species.  I use the African Penguin as one example of animals that may become extinct if we do not protect them.    Some of the leading causes of death of African Penguins are poaching and pollution,  two activities that we can stop if we all work together.  More law enforcement is needed to protect the African Penguin and other endangered species around the world.   Pollution could be controlled by doing little things such as turning off lights when you are not in a room, and pick up trash you see.  By doing just a few simple things, we can help save species that are endangered around the world, just like the African Penguin.

Stop Abusing the heart.

Sharpies and Paint.

This hexagon represents stopping violence. Violence takes more than 1.5 million people a year, 50% due to suicide,35% due to homicide, and 12% as a result of war or conflict. This is important to me because I feel that it s unnecessary for people to use violence especially when taking live. The heart represents abused people.

Feed the Children

by: Jack C.

My piece of artwork is called Feed The Children.  I used some pictures and rice to make my hexagon look nice and to get across the message of many starving children around the world.  The pictures show a couple of the many children that suffer from being extremely hungry and not being able to eat much at all.  They also show the continent of Africa which is where a lot of the hunger occurs.  The rice that borders the hexagon represents the food that they could be eating if we stepped up and tried to help them just a little bit.  Just a little help could mean a lot to a starving kid in Africa.
The issue of child hunger is a very serious one.  15 million children die of hunger each year and every 5.6 seconds someone dies of hunger also.  Although the issue still exists, many people around the world are working hard to stop it.  People and schools are raising money to send food over to them, charities have been created, and even ads on t.v have been shown just to get people’s attention and support.  The issue of child hunger is important to me because those kids are human beings just like us.  They are very less fortunate than us, so we should give back a little to them because it would make their lives that much better.  No one deserves to suffer.

Lastly, I showed some of the many disgusting and just outright terrible images in my work of art.  This should motivate people to help these kids and get them healthy like they should be.  And the rice symbolizes what will heal them and help them to be normal kids.  So feed the children!

This was my first hexagon. It depicted the problem of war. This problem goes under the category of environment because war is not a safe a sustainable place. I used colored pencils, glitter, decorative paper, felt, and styrofoam. The picture shows a fallen soldiers belongings. These are the actual belongings of a soldier I knew that was deported to Afghanistan. He was shot and killed a couple months later. I made this hexagon for him.

This was my book of hexagons. My first issue was having to do with the struggle and problem of war. It depicted a fallen soldiers belongings. For the book of hexagons I drew a solution to war. I used pen and ink to draw the four main branches of the military and their emblem: the U.S. Army, the Air Force, the Navy, and the Marines. Of course, there are many more branches of the military like the coast guard and ect.. I chose the four most popular branches that would be familiar with everyone.
You may be thinking, “ These people don’t stop the war. They are what start the war!” but this is wrong. They are sent in to other places that think the only way to solve their problem is to attack someone. These people help finish up what these other countries have started. They are the good guys that want to stop the war as soon as possible.
In the two remaining hexagons on the outsides are full of quotes about the horridness of war. One of my favorite quotes on the hexagon is, “ An eye for and eye makes the whole world blind.” -Gandhi
The middle box is very personal to me. My friends brother-in-law, who was like a brother of my own, went in the Marines and was deported to Afghanistan. He was shot and killed there. This was his emblem. They were Darkhorse ⅗ and their “slogan” was “Get Some”.

The name of my artwork is help stop animal abuse.  Animal abuse is a problem almost everywhere in the U.S. There were 1085 recorded cases of animal abuse in 2010. This is important to me because I feel that it is wrong to abuse animals. Everyone and everything should be treated equal. In my picture, I used colored pencils to draw a dog behind a fence. I think this relates to animals abuse because most abused animals are locked up behind fences and gates.

Human Trafficking is an issue that has become widespread throughout the world. Millions of people are trafficked each year, including women, men, and children, sexually and for labor. Although human trafficking will not disappear completely any time soon, we need to try to stop it as much as possible. This issue is close to me because I feel that no young girl should be forced into sexual slavery or slavery for labor, or anyone else for that matter. What these individuals suffer through should be a concern to people across the globe. Many organizations are working to stop this issue. These organizations include: NotForSaleCampaign.org, PolarisProject.org, and HumanTrafficking.org. There is a 24/7 human trafficking hotline available, and maps that provide information about recent reports of human trafficking. To take action, you can inform yourself about the issue, donate to organizations, volunteer, and spread awareness to others. To begin spreading awareness myself, I displayed images that represented these methods of solutions on my artwork. I provided the human trafficking hotline, and included ways that others can get involved. I hope that many people will become more aware of this global issue and take action in the future to stop human trafficking.

I teach with Emily Cook in a Chicago suburban school. While my students have learned about global issues in the past, this project allowed them to see that these are not problems that people in other places in the world have to deal with, but rather, that these are world problems, and since we all have a civic responsibility to the world, these are our problems too.
