In the world, many families don’t have enough food for their whole family. There is 870 million people in Africa and 578 million people living in Asia and the pacific that don’t have enough to eat. On my hexagon, I drew continents Africa and Asia because thats where starvation is mostly common. It is important to me because I see people that stuff themselves with food they don’t care that people in this world have nothing to eat.
The media I used on my  hexagon was markers and colored pencil. On my hexagon I drew the world on a plate so symbolize that the world has people that have an empty plate everyday and that we should do something to fill this empty plate.

                                                    The Hexagon Project

                                                          By: Claire O’.

The global issue that I did for The Hexagon Project is child abuse. I think that child abuse goes under the category of children. The picture that I did for my project is gruesome and shows a child that got badly beaten up by her parents. This picture is a negative example because it represents what happens to a child when the parents abuse them. My picture fits into a scary and sad theme because it’s the reality of what can happen when parents take their anger out on their children. I chose this picture because it’s very sad and it represents that parents should never abuse their children. Massachusetts has the most child abuse than any other state. 3.3 million reports of child abuse has been reported.
Gateway.org helps stop child abuse because they inform people facts about child abuse to let citizens know how serious of a global issue, world wide problem this is! They jot down small facts and tasks that average people  can do to make a difference and to help end this problem. Another website that helps end child abuse is freearts.org because they get to together and draw happy paintings and let out all their frustrated feelings. One way that progress has been made to help end child abuse is everychildmatters.org because they have a bunch of projects that you can get involved in that are against child abuse.
My hexagon is important to me because it shows that the world doesn’t have to have child abuse. My world wide wish is that child abuse will end and that the world will get together and make peace. Child abuse is when parents are frustrated so they take out their anger on their children. Children are innocent and little, they shouldn’t be afraid of coming home from school and getting yelled at and beaten. What I would like for my audience to see for my hexagon is that my message to everyone is to stop abusing their children. When the children are older, they will never forget getting abused and the memory will stick in their head. I put bubble letters on my hexagon so that it will stick out and people will get my message and know that my wish is to stop child abuse.

Bullying is worldwide concern because everyday, people around the world are picked on and it may lead to injury, hurt feelings, feeling of fear, or even suicide. Mostly bullying takes
place at school or online.  1 out of 4 teens are bullied, also 160,000 students
stay home because they are scared about being bullied.  The most frequent place
where bullying takes place, 43%, occurs in a school bathroom.  If you see kids
being bullied, you can stand up for the person or you can tell an adult.
Bullying is important to me because everyday I see kids picking on other kids,
the person that is the bully may think that it is just a joke, but inside the
person’s feelings may be hurt.
I used colorpencil and markers to create my hexagon. My
drawing is cut in half, one side is clenched teeth and eyebrows pointed down
like the bully.  The other side has an eye with tears runinng down the face,
which represents the person that just got bullied. Remember, it isn’t big to
make others feel small.

My hexagon shows people from different races coming together to stop racism. My picture also shows a positive example of racism because the people of different races are holding hands. Racism is most prevalent in the United States, Germany, South America and Africa. Anybody can be affected by this because one race can be racist to another. There are also many organizations like the American Arab discrimination committee and the American institute of diversity that are trying to stop this problem. Some progress that has been done is that Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. stood up for what they believed in and now we no longer have separate  things and people of different races can sit together without being judged. I think that racism is a big issue and thats why i chose the topic of racism and expressed it through my hexagon.

Is It Worth It?

The topic I chose to for my project is starvation. This is a major issue in our world today and I believe it should be taken care of. In my hexagon, I tried to display how hunger is affecting many people. If we can just simplify our lives, we may save others.

The media I used in my project are rice, printed pictures, and colored paper. I used rice in my hexagon because it symbolized how one tiny thing can save a life. Rice is an example of a food that a child could eat and save them from starvation. Our world has started to recognize starvation, but that does not mean it has stopped. There are organizations out there like Feed My Starving Children and Kids Against Hunger. They are helping and making many kids happy but there are also less fortunate ones. We need to help these people like we help others. It is important to me because I believe that no one should suffer, especially when they didn’t do anything wrong.

My hexagon has many objects that represent something. I divided my piece of art into two separate sides. The dark side has black and white pictures on it showing how little these helpless people have. All of the pictures I put on this side have straight edges representing how clear and straightforward this problem is ; we need to end hunger.
On the other side of the hexagon, I used rainbow paper as my background representing how this problem is being solved. Rainbows normally symbolize happiness and if we ended hunger, everyone would be happy. The pictures I used are in color showing how bright our world would be if everyone were healthy and happy. I cut the pictures so they have rounded edges. This symbolizes how we are all connected and should come together as a whole to end this concern. I put the logos of the organizations helping on this side too. They are overlapping the “dark” side showing that we can overcome this horrible issue. So now think, is it worth it to make a difference?

In America, a rough 750,000 men, women, and children are without a home on any night. Approximately, 3.5 million people in America experience homelessness within a years time. Many elements were used to create my hexagon. I used dark colors of paint for the buildings. I chose dark paint because homelessness is not a positive concept. I used aluminum foil for a shopping cart because I have seen homeless people who transport their things this way. All of these items were apart of my way to show how bad homelessness is affecting the world. I used glitter, glitter glue, and pastel sharpies to show that there are things being done to demolish try to homelessness. I painted homeless people because they show how bad the economy has gotten and are the ones being affected by homelessness. I also painted a food pantry to show that people are helping the homeless. Things that are helping the homeless are shelters, food pantries, and also supportive housing. I added newspaper on my hexagon to show how big of a problem homelessness is becoming. In the news, they have all of the major news, and homelessness is becoming a major problem. Homelessness affects so many people all over the world. It is difficult for people who are homeless to get proper health care, rest, food, shelter, being clean and staying warm . Most of these things we take advantage of, for homeless people probably  taking a shower is luxury. This problem affects me because I want the world to improve. Even donating a few things can make a difference.

We need to stop starvation. Hunger is the number one health risk that takes 25,000 people’s lives every day. One in seven people worldwide go to bed hungry. People all around the World are hungry. Everywhere from India to your own neighborhood, people are going hungry. Although it can happen anywhere, most starvation happens in India and other developing countries. Starvation has gotten so bad in developing countries that one in four children are underweight. I believe that no one should go through starvation and that the world as a whole needs to make more of an attempt to help out. In my hexagon, I used black and white pictures in the back to symbolize the sadness of starvation and to show how serious it is. I also painted “stop hunger” across the front because it is very important that we take steps to stop hunger. I did each letter in a different symbol to show different things. For example, i did a ying-yang sign as an o to show that no matter how different we are, we can work together and make a difference. I hope that in the near future, everyone will be working together to end hunger around the world.

Global warming is a big issue around the world. Not only are people being affected by global warming, but sea life and animals are too. Global warming causes the
earth to be hotter. As a result it: dries up the earth making it hard to farm,
melts glaciers and ice, causing animals like polar bears to drown, and can kill
sea life in the Barrier Reef when water temperature gets too hot. Also, the
change in weather causes water to rise and flood islands making it inhabitable
to live at. Some ways to help stop Global Warming is: reduce, reuse and recycle
products, drive less, and plant trees. In my artwork I drew an earth on fire to
represent clobal warming making the earth hotter. I also drew some really dry
land with cracks, because global warming is drying up land around the world.
This topic is important to me, because I love animals, and global warming is
affecting how they live, like in Antarctica. I want to help stop Global warming
not only for the animals, but because some people are affected by it as well and
can it be a life threatening situation with floods.
The media I used was colored pencils and
sharpies.

There are 15 million children that die every year due to starvation alone. To create this hexagon project I used; picture from the internet, construction paper, and a sharpie. My pictures are either of happy or sad kids in Africa . One picture shows a logo for Feed my Starving Children. Feed ,y Starving Children is an organization that helps out kids all over the world . This isn’t the only organization but probably one of the ones that has had the biggest impact in the world.  This issue has been around way before 1985. Even with all the organizations that exist, the problem still occurs.

On my hexagon it includes a quote and a statistic as well. The quote says “If you can’t feed a hundred people then feed just one.”- Mother Teresa. Which basically means to always help the hungry. And the statistic says “ Every year 15 million children die from starvation.” This problem disgusts me to know that kids out there have hardly any fat on their bodies.  When I’m older or maybe soon I would love to help out the kids in need and try to put a stop to this occurring problem. I hope to see this problem decrease within my lifetime and I would like to at least have been apart of it to resolve it.

Be the Sollution to Air Pollution
By: Bridget R
I used lots of different materials and art tools to create my hexagon. I used real sticks from nature for the tree bark,, and to border the Present side, I used a silky light blue material to embody a Waterfall. On the Future side I used dirty cotton balls. I dirtied them with real dirt, I used lead from a pencil to add a dreary feeling to my piece. I want the viewer to visualise that pollution will be a big issue to not only ourselves but to nature. I want the future generations to be able to experience all the beauty nature has to offer. This issue has a very big impact on every individual. This affects me because I want my children and my children’s children to be able to have the same opportunities that we do now. I used dirty cotton balls to show the overwhelming amount of air pollutants that big corporations are pouring into the troposphere and beyond. I used a silky blue material to symbolize a waterfall. I think that waterfalls are so beautiful and they should be preserved. I used real sticks to show that nature is still real but eventually it won’t. We need to embrace it while we have it.

You can do little things everyday to help stop pollution. Turn off water when you are brushing your teeth, recycle, don’t litter. There are so many ways that we can help improve the environment little ways everyday. We have the power to change our future!

While my students have learned about global issues in the past, this project allowed them to see that these are not problems that people in other places in the world have to deal with, but rather, that these are world problems, and since we all have a civic responsibility to the world, these are our problems too.
