Animal abuse/cruelty is a major issue in the world. So many animals die because they were neglected by their owners. This issue is important to me because I love animals and it is unfair for animals to be treated bad. Animals have needs and feelings too.

I made the dog skinny and showing its ribs because starving animals is one of the many ways they are neglected. I wrote have a heart to symbolize how sad of an issue this is and how the only way we can stop animal cruelty is to have a heart.
The media I used: colored pencils and sharpie.

Homelessness on signs

Homelessness is an issue because we live with it all around us and sometimes we don’t care about it.  Our parents teach us to ignore, don’t look at, and never ever talk to a homeless man when we go to the city.  I was told that these people did something wrong, they want my money, and so on.  As I grew up, I realized that this wasn’t always true, and some people never come to understand this.  Most of the people who are homeless ran away from something, anything from an unwanted life, or abuse.  We may think of homeless people as someone who lost their job, but 25% of them are children.  We take this issue as a part of our life, and something that someone else should take care of.  I think that just by understanding what homelessness is really like, people will help solve this issue.  Many schools do a 'Homeless Awareness' day where kids sleep outside for a night to realize the hardships of being homeless.  Other organizations like the CCH combines community organizing and legal aid to the homeless.

I used a background that is colorful with both dark and bright colors created by colored pencils.  The dark colors symbolize the shame that the homeless men and women feel, the cold, dark nights they sleep through, and the hunger and pain they feel.  The bright colors symbolize the hope, the dark colors turning into bright colors shows that this issue can be fixed.  The homeless man I drew is facing toward the bright colors, showing that that is where he wants to be.  The cardboard signs are the signs that the homeless people hold up, and that is the main thing that I think of when I think of the homeless people in the world.  The signs are the homeless men’s and women’s feelings, and the hope and future they want to have.

End Starvation

Markers, Colored Pencils

Starvation is a big world problem. Every night, 1 in every 7 people go to bed hungry and 1 out of 4 children in developing countries is underweight. Hunger has become the world’s number one health risk. This is a very important topic to me because I am one of those kids that always wants food and I am always eating something. Going just 2 or 3 days without food makes me go crazy. It broke my heart when I found out so many kids go days and even weeks without food when I have an endless supply of it.

In my hexagon to symbolize hunger I drew children reaching for food. This symbolizes hunger because all these kids want food but it is sadly out of their reach

My hexagon touched on the issue of world hunger. This is a very big issue in the world today. Every 5 seconds a child dies of starvation. While we all have plenty food to eat, 925 million people are starving in poor places such as Africa and Somalia. Organizations are getting food over to places where there is not a lot of food. Websites such freepoverty.com and freerice.com are donating rice and water to these places as well. Other organizations are, UNICEF, bread.org and action against hunger. I drew one African child dead on the ground and one other child sitting down crying and starving. The starving child is looking down on other kids who are enjoying eating food and are having a great time. I drew this to show how unfair it is i places such as Africa since we all have plenty to eat while other kids have nothing.

My hexagon represents endangered species. My hexagon has one wolf standing alone under the night sky, crying, with tumbleweed blowing by. Then there are words at the bottom saying I don’t want to howl alone. To make my hexagon i took different shades of blue paint and used a sponge to paint the sky then I  took fabric and put it over the blue to make it look more blended and like there were actually stars  in it too. I drew the wolf and painted it with mixtures of browns and grays. I also used sharpie for the grass and tear drops, and a piece of yarn for the tumbleweed. My artwork shows a wolf that is all alone and not wanting to stay that way. It also shows that there are fewer wolves now because we are destroying there habitats and killing them so they are dying. Now, if humans keep up what they’re doing there will eventually be no more wolves. This problem is relevant everywhere in the world. It affects both animals and humans. Everyday we lose a species of animals because we cut down there natural habitats to build more cities. Global warming is causing Antarctica to melt leaving the animals that live there do drown since there will be no land left for them to live on. Rainforests are being destroyed along with the animals that live there. This is important to me because i care about animals and it’s sad to know that we are losing a species of animals that we will never get back. We should support organizations like the Wildlife Conservation Network which works to help build and keep animal natural habitats. If we stop cutting down their homes and try to protect them we could save many animal species.

My hexagon portrayed one of the biggest epidemics in the world today.  Terrorism happens in nearly every country.  Whether it is a small thirty soldier rebellion hurting innocent citizens or profound world organization that can wipe out cities if they get hold of nuclear materials or hazardous bombs. The incident of 9/11 is the biggest terrorist attack in U.S. history. Killing over three thousand people, I drew a memorial to 9/11 and the people whose lives were lost along with examples of terrorist groups.

I felt that basic tools like colored pencils and markers were appropriate to portray this issue along with the imagination of the drawer.

                                                          We Will Remember

                                                           By: Patryk S.

September 11, 2001 was not an ordinary day- it was a tragedy. On that day two planes hit the world trade center in New York, another went down in a field in Pennsylvania, and still one more crashed into the Pentagon. Approximately 3,000 people died from terrorist attack and many families lost their loved because of this. This event is incredibly important to me because we need more security in our country and we should have security on planes so if this might happen again we can arrest the people that were trying to attack someone on the plane or do some other type of violence. If we can do this then America will be very safe. The media I used to create my hexagon was colored pencils, a sharpie, and a pencil. I also used a ruler to make all the pictures straight and nice. The reason I used colored pencils was because it would bring out the color, whereas with markers the color would run out, plus it might even smear.

Pangea
Even though racism and sexism may seem like a thing of the past to some, to me it is very much still alive.  Everyday I hear comments about these topics and it makes me think about how such a little comment to one person may mean the world to another.  Some of these comments can hurt many people, and we only say them because we compare others and their differences to ourselves rather than our similarities.  We must all learn to accept other for their differences and our similarities.  If we do, we can eventually all come together to help solve larger world problems as a whole and show a more positive outcome in other great achievements.

In my artwork I drew a picture of Pangea.  Pangea is a prehistoric landmass that existed millions of years ago.  However, now it is a symbol of unity and being a whole and that in one way or another, we are all connected.  I used colored and regular number two pencils, black sharpie markers, and white poster paint markers in my artwork to help portray this.

Hexagon Project
My topic is Stop the War. The world wide significance is that the war in Iraq is ending. It is important to me because people died for us in the war. Well the art work I did is the U.S. flag, and I also used a peace sign to show we should stop the war. Also I used people fighting to show war. I also made the earth to show we only have one earth and live peacefully.

I teach with Emily Cook in a Chicago suburban school. While my students have learned about global issues in the past, this project allowed them to see that these are not problems that people in other places in the world have to deal with, but rather, that these are world problems, and since we all have a civic responsibility to the world, these are our problems too.
