The subject of my project, democracy, is an important concern for all of the world’s inhabitants.  The people’s ability to rule themselves is one of the most basic human rights, and it has always been something that people have yearned for.

As of right now, there are several countries in the Middle East that are trying to overthrow autocratic governments, and replace them with democracies.  It is mostly the responsibility of the people to fight for their own democracies, and there is much controversy over whether the United States should intervene in such situations.

Luckily, democracy is becoming more prominent as a form of government in the world.  According to World Forum on Democracy, the number of countries represented by democracies has more than tripled since 1972!

This issue is important to me because I believe that it is a person’s very basic right to be able to govern himself, and that it is inhumane to deny a person that right.

I chose to use acrylic paints because I thought that it would help me to show vagueness and subtlety-that democracy is a right for everyone, not just one person in particular.

In my project, the figures represent the people in the world who are trying to rise up and drive out autocratic government.  The flags represent the spirit of the movements that the people create.  Oppression is represented by the dark, purple void behind the revolutionaries.  The landscape gets progressively less bleak and more bright as they near democracy, represented by the bright, white light that the people struggle towards.

The acrylic paint really stands out when you look at your hexagon. I like the Gothic calligraphy styled quote. Δ
