My picture is of Lonesome George, a Pinta Island Tortoise. He is the last of the Chelonoidis Nigra Abingdoni subspecies. If he dies, his species will die as well. My hexagon fits into the Environment theme. I depicted this problem by putting George on an island to show that there is no other tortoise like him. I put words surrounding him that depicts his condition. I love reptiles and thought that this was serious.

There are several solutions to this problem, some of which are in action now. First, another possible PInta Island tortoise has been found. Named Tony, he is in the Prague Zoo. Also, they are attempting to cross breed George with other tortoises from the surrounding islands. Though none of them have hatched, different species are being tried. Another solution is the possibility of a female somewhere on the island. A $10,000 reward is in order for the location of one. I used colored pencils for this drawing.

I teach middle school art in the suburban Chicago area. This project has allowed my eighth grade students to confront global issues and to have an artistic voice that expresses their concerns and passions that one day just might change the world.

I teach with Emily Cook in a Chicago suburban school. While my students have learned about global issues in the past, this project allowed them to see that these are not problems that people in other places in the world have to deal with, but rather, that these are world problems, and since we all have a civic responsibility to the world, these are our problems too.
