I used colored pencils to draw this picture.  This picture represents resolving war and the world all living together. This is important to me because I think it portrays something positive. John Lennon is a very good role model.

Stop the Terrorism
Terrorism is an unexpected attack, that people sacrifice their lives for an idea that they have.  More than 2,000 people die each year, all over the world, from these attacks.  People are trying to stop terrorism by securing airports, and have better country defenses. There are many people that are in local and global peace groups that encourage people not to be a part of it.
For the hexagon, I used colored pencils, a number 2 pencil, and a thin felt tip pen.  I used it because I thought it would help show the color contrast
The picture is of the 9/11 terrorist attack in New York City.  I used pencils to symbolize the fog that was created, and put in the words “Stop the Terrorism” to make it look like it was written in the fog.  The 9/11 attack killed hundreds of people, but yet it built our country stronger.

Picture
Each hexagon in this booklet has important to the conflict of terrorism.  The airplane is supposed to symbolize the 9/11 attack.  The picture of Earth is supposed to symbolize itself falling apart, because of bombings and other conflicts terrorism causes.  The tombstone is supposed to symbolize  someone who died involving terrorism. The National Guard is supposed to symbolize who protects us.  The "no peace" symbol is there because terrorism and its followers are causing a disturbance to peace. The Stop Terrorism hexagon is telling people to stop, and it shows the blood that is being shed because of it. Lastly, the quote from George W. Bush says that "This was not an act of terrorism, but an act of war." I included it because it was more than just an idea, it started a war.

Worldwide Pollution
I used paint, colored pencils, colored pencil sticks, and chalk.
We know that pollution affects us all, and it is such a big problem that we think we as individuals can’t do anything to help. 65% of drinking water comes from rivers and streams, but 40% of rivers and streams in the United States are too polluted for fishing and swimming. Over 80% of marine pollution comes from land-based activities, which affects our drinking water as well as animals’ homes.
I used black paint to represent the oil spills, and how they affected wildlife. In the background, I drew a skyline in black chalk and smeared it to show how our pollution and smoke is still in the air we breath. I covered the recycle-logo in the black chalk to show how our efforts still aren’t enough.

As you can see my picture is of 2 rhinos. But these are special rhinos they are black rhinos. Which are endangered and are being poached. The global significance of this is they are being poached mostly for their horns and are endangered. This is bad because they are a part of the ecosystem and also shouldn’t be killed for that. I used blended pencil because it looks kind of sad which this problem is. Also the rhino is black colored so if I used color there wouldn’t be much color anyway.

For my hexagon i used colored pencils. I only used black and white. I chose the topic of war because it is important to me and I think it should be resolved. War is an issue but people keep fighting. My hexagon resembles not only to stop war but to stop any fighting. It could even be a fight with your family or friends. In my picture i drew John Lennon and Yoko Ono because to me they resemble peace. John and Yoko are an inspiration to me and i hope peace can be spread throughout the world.

One Dollar to the Hungry Can Save Lives

Hunger can really affect a person’s life. It is astonishing that every 3.6 seconds a person dies of hunger. That leads to 30 million people a year. Most of these people live in Asia and the Pacific. With in that 30 million people, 2,250,000 or 75%, are children. Those people that are starving eat very little, if any, amounts of food each day. These people can be made happy, with just a little food, because it makes such a difference in their life. Donating one dollar can feed four kids.

This is important to me because as a child, I am so happy to have a house to live in and food to eat all the time. I am very concerned for those who do not have these same things. Right now, there are many organizations that are trying to help this issue. For example, Yum! Brands has raised over $60 million and helped provide 250 million meals for people all around the world. Our school, participates in the Walk Against Hunger at the end of the year which raises money for the poor. Similar to this, many schools and organizations work hard through fundraisers and donations to get money and food to the hungry.

In my hexagon, I printed out images of statistics and other pictures of starving people. This shows how hungry they are and how they barely get any food. The media I used to create this project is, pictures from the Internet, paint, glue, and scissors. I chose pictures from the Internet to illustrate hunger because pictures are the most detailed form of media, you can see every detail of the picture. I put pictures of a child eating crumbs off a floor because that shows how hungry he is. As you can see, hunger is a big issue and people are trying their hardest to stop it. Just remember, that donating one dollar can save 4 kids lives.

The name of my art piece is “Crying Eyes of Hunger”.
I used pencil and colored pencils on this art piece.
The world wide problem depicted in this artwork is child hunger. This issue is important to me because it makes me sad to see that kids all over the world are dying of starvation and that they go to bed hungry while I always am well fed.
I chose to draw an eye crying because I think this symbolizes the issue of child hunger well.

The issue I chose to address was the constantly worsening condition of the United States economy and the value of the dollar. If this problem is not addressed quickly and effectively, we will soon find ourselves in a second Great Depression. We are already experiencing the greatest economic crisis since then, but if the problem is not fixed, we will experience a depression equal to or greater than the one that gripped our country in the 1920’s and 30’s. This is important to me because the U.S. economy and the value of the dollar have a direct effect on the well being of me and every other American in this country. Over 20 million Americans are currently unemployed and face problems with money every day. Also, our national debt has climbed to over 56 trillion dollars and is constantly rising. Because of our government freely spending and producing money, the value of a dollar has plummeted in the past few years. I depicted this in my art with a dollar bill following an arrow down, which symbolizes the falling value of a dollar and the decline of the U.S. economy. I used markers and pictures from various online sites to help me express this problem through art. I chose this media because it gave me the most flexibility in expressing this problem.

The significant issues involved in homelessness is that they have no home, and no money to get necessary items to live. Images that come to my mind concerning homelessness, are people starving, out alone in the rain, and freezing. Symbols that I could use to illustrate the concern could be a tent they live in, a bench they sleep on, or a cardboard poster that they make.
To describe the issue the colors I would use would be dark colors, browns, and blues.
In my picture I would put the words, “Stop Homelessness”. The type of media I would use to decorate my hexagon would be colored pencils to give it some color and make neater marks.
My Commentary:   Name: Megan W.
Name of Artwork: Homelessness Strikes

Homelessness strikes Media used: Colored Pencils

Explain the world and why it’s important to you: The problem with homelessness is that people are out in the cold, sick and dieing with no necessary items for living. This is horrible because their lives are spent out in the cold dieng and alone, while we don’t even spare them a few cents.
because people are out in the cold, sick and dieing. This is horrible because their lives are ending too early from no food and we are just wasting it and no one should be left to die!
What I did to symbolize the issue: I used dark colors, I put a tent in it, a starving puppy, and a rain cloud to represent them being left in the rain, starved and alone.

My hexagon represents Domestic Violence. Usually people who are victims of domestic violence are  hurt by someone they know and trust. ⅔ women who are victims of violence say that they were victimized by someone they know. 28% were husbands and boyfriends. Most victims dont report they are being hurt because they are afraid they will be hurt even more or are threatened. This is a serious issue to me because I beleive that no one has the right to hurt and abuse another human being. I drew a crying girl covered in bruises with a fist in the background and a storm behind her. I drew it to show how she has been beat up and caught in a huge storm that she cant get out of. To draw this I used colored pencils. Marcelina K.

I teach with Emily Cook in a Chicago suburban school. While my students have learned about global issues in the past, this project allowed them to see that these are not problems that people in other places in the world have to deal with, but rather, that these are world problems, and since we all have a civic responsibility to the world, these are our problems too.
